TEXT PREPARATION 3

Assignment due in class on March 3* from members of Group 3

*Since part of the value of the text preparation assignment is that it will prepare you to be an active participant in tutorial and in class, it may only be submitted in class on the day it is due.  If you have to miss that day's class, please contact the instructor or TA to make alternate arrangements.

Please read:

Martin Buber, “Biblical Leadership” (1933) [selection in Coursepack 2 / copy from The Martin Buber Reader on reserve]; and The Prophetic Faith (1940), 60–69, 170–83 [selection in Coursepack 2 / book on reserve]

and address the following two questions in 2-3 well-written paragraphs each (spanning 3-4 pages), with detailed reference to the texts. Since this is your first reading of these texts, and since we have not yet discussed them in class, you are not being asked to supply definitive answers but preliminary, thoughtful responses based on attentive reading. Your answers may also include 1-2 important questions raised by your reading for further discussion.

1. (on "Biblical Leadership")
Buber's characterization of biblical leadership highlights a number of features or traits that run counter to those that we typically associate with powerful leaders.  Name two such features and explain why Buber highlights them.

2. (on the selection from The Prophetic Faith)
According to Buber, what is the role of the prophet vis-à-vis the human king on the one hand, and the divine king/God on the other?
