TAKE-HOME QUIZ 5 - Assignment due in class either on November 6 or on November 8

Read Schleiermacher's On Religion: First Speech and Second Speech.  Write 2-5 well-written paragraphs on one of the following questions:

For November 6: What does Schleiermacher mean by "metaphysics" and by "morals"?  What do they have to do with religion, and how do they nevertheless fail to capture what is essential to religion?

For November 8: "Religion is neither thinking nor acting, but intuition and feeling" (Second Speech, 22).  With close attention to the text, see what you can discover about what Schleiermacher means by "intuition" and by "feeling."

Students who wish to make up a quiz that they missed can answer both questions for both days--please indicate on your quiz that this is what you are doing.

As for past quizzes, you needn't aim for definitive answers but preliminary, thoughtful responses based on close attention to the text. Your answers may also include 1-2 important questions raised by your reading for further discussion.

Please type and double-space your answer, and number and staple the pages you hand in.

Please keep a copy of your quiz to refer to in class discussion.
