Department of Political Science welcomes new Post-Doc

Maroine Bendaoud to study social housing in Ontario

Jun 26, 2017

Ontario stands out among Canadian provinces for the extent of municipal responsibility for social housing. Twenty years after the Ontario government downloaded responsibility, what can we say about the policy choices made by cities such as Toronto and Ottawa?

Dr. Maroine Bendaoud is undertaking a 2-year SSHRC funded post-doc to better understand what Ontario cities have been doing in social housing. In his doctoral research at Université de Montréal, he uncovered parallel trends in Alberta, British Columbia and Quebec around targeting vulnerable citizens, promoting non-profit over public housing, and using private market instruments.  He is interested in understanding whether similar trends express themselves in Ontario, and how learning contributes to this convergence.

Dr. Bendaoud was recently interviewed by the Calgary Homeless Foundation about his earlier research.
