Topics in Buddhist Thought and History

This seminar will explore various issues in the study of Indian Buddhism, with particular reference to Indian Buddhist conceptions of literature, canonicity, and the role of commentary. Students will be expected to become familiar with a range of Buddhist textual genres: from the Pāli canon, early Mahāyāna sūtras, to jātakas, avadānas, monastic law codes, and abhidharma treatises. In addition to a research essay, students may be required to submit short (1-2 page), critical response papers on a regular basis, and occasional assignments relating to the use of specialised research tools.
