Dr. Lisa Kaida, Sociology 2Z03: Introduction to Sociological Research (approximately 70 students)

About 30% of Dr. Kaida’s course was devoted to active-learning activities.  The main activity was using Google Forum and Google Slides to gather feedback from students on.  She did not assign any class participation marks for this activity.  She developed these activities from individual consultations with staff at the MacPherson Institute and participation in active learning-related workshops offered by the MacPherson Institute.

She found that the practical challenges of implementing active-learning activities were:

  • the amount of time needed to develop them
  • explaining to students how to participate in active-learning activities
  • compatibility issues related to students' laptop and the cables available on the connection ports in the tables in ALCs

Her advice to other instructors would be having a one-on-one meeting with MacPherson staff for help in choosing an active learning method suitable to your particular course.
