A message from Dean Hurley to the Faculty of Social Sciences

"You have shown immense diligence in your response to COVID-19 thus far. Thank you for working hard to create the supports needed for the next few weeks. I ask for your continued patience as we strive to adapt to this continuously evolving situation."

Mar 15, 2020

Dear students, staff and faculty,

It has been an unprecedented week for our Faculty and for the University as a whole. Thank you for your patience and resilience as we work with colleagues from across campus to deploy new policies and resources to protect our community.

I want to take this opportunity to assure you that your health and well-being are of utmost importance to me and the Faculty leadership. We are committed to finding solutions that put your health first.

At this time, the University is continually evaluating its next steps in light of new information that comes available. For the most up-to-date information on McMaster’s course of action, please refer to the dedicated COVID-19 website. Faculty-specific changes will be communicated to you by the Dean's Office, while department-specific changes will be communicated by your chairs, directors and administrators.

Recognizing that this season of uncertainty is stressful for everyone in our community, we will do whatever we can to guide you through the changes being made. If you have questions that are not addressed by the FAQ on the COVID-19 website or the new HR resource, please email the appropriate contact as noted below.

  • Instructors: please direct your questions to your chair/director or to the most relevant Faculty of Social Sciences staff member as appropriate.
  • Staff: please direct your questions to your supervisor.
  • Students: please note that all course modifications will be communicated to you by your instructor by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 18. Please refrain from contacting your instructors until they inform you of the revised plan for completing the term in their course. Once that information is made available, seek clarification from your instructor as needed.

You have shown immense diligence in your response to COVID-19 thus far. Thank you for working hard to create the supports needed for the next few weeks. I ask for your continued patience as we strive to adapt to this continuously evolving situation.

In the Faculty of Social Sciences, we are uniquely equipped to lead thoughtful conversations related to COVID-19. I encourage you to be gracious and informed as you provide leadership to our community in this way.

Sincerely,

Jeremiah E. Hurley, Dean and Professor
