Myanmar Gender Equality Research Project

Dr. Netina Tan (PI and academic lead) and Dr. Michelle Dion (co-investigator) from the Department of Political Science are part of an international research team working in collaboration with the Enlightened Myanmar Research Foundation (EMReF) on a research project entitled Engendering Political Recruitment and Participation at the Party, Local and National Level in Myanmar.

Jun 17, 2020

Funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) this project aims to advance the research capacity of EMReF by providing training in qualitative and quantitative research methods and collecting new data on political parties’ candidate selection methods to raise women’s political participation in Myanmar.  Over a three-year period (2018-2020), the research team has collaborated with EMReF to conduct elite interviews, surveys and focus group studies to better understand local attitudes towards women and men politicians, internal party politics and recruitment at the local level. Written in conjunction with EMReF, the project will produce two working papers, one comparative report based on EMReF’s visit to Indonesia and Malaysia and one final report by the end of 2020.
