Zachary Vrhovsek, who graduates this week with a double major in economics and mathematics, is one of this year’s recipients of the prestigious Governor General’s Awards.

Established in 1873, the awards recognize outstanding students for their high scholastic achievements. Every year, the award is given to two exceptional McMaster students.

Throughout his undergraduate career, Vrhovsek has undertaken several research projects, including an analysis of the effects of universal childcare and an investigation into the impact of climate change on the agricultural sector. As a research assistant at the McMaster Research Data Centre, he contributed to a project to analyse prescription drug coverage in Ontario and Quebec.

“Tools developed in economics help us understand complex social systems like politics, education, healthcare and even our interaction with the environment,” says Vrhovsek. “These diverse applications ensure that there is always something new to learn and I am excited to continue to learn more about economics as I continue my education.”

Vrhovsek says that he couldn’t have made his academic accomplishments without a strong support system, “I would like to give a special thanks to Dr. Chris Muris for his dedicated mentorship and to my parents for their continuous support in everything I do.”

This fall, Vrhovsek will be attending the University of British Columbia to pursue a Master of Arts in Economics.
