My research is centralized on palaeoethnobotany and landscape archaeology in the North Atlantic region.  I will be focused on retrieving microscopic plant remains (e.g., phytoliths) from Northern Scotland as a means to enhance the interpretations of early historic archaeological sites.  I am motivated to explore how the people of the North Atlantic (including but not limited to the cultural groups of the Picts, Scots, and Norse) interacted with their proximal flora and landscape.  This will be pursued by examining phytolith suites from Northern Scotland to determine if there were preferences of wild vs. cultivated plants, and how these preferences compare to the other cultural groups in the North Atlantic region.  It is my hope that this research will create a solid foundation for future phytolith analyses in the North Atlantic Region.
