Celebrating Dr. Henry Jacek

Friends, colleagues, gather to mark his retirement

Jun 08, 2018

On Tuesday, friends and colleagues filled the Great Hall of the faculty club to celebrate Dr. Henry Jacek's many contribution to the university on the occasion of his retirement. Dr. Jacek arrived at McMaster in 1967, and as Dean Jeremiah Hurley noted, it is hard to think of a role he did not fill in the subsequent 51 years.

Former students Jaskiran Shoker and Simon Granat underlined how Dr. Jacek was a caring and thoughtful teacher, who brought the practical into his classroom through assignments and guest speakers. He was also a wonderful mentor, helping countless students find their way into jobs in their field.

Dr. William Coleman, Dr. George Breckenridge and Dr. Karen Bird all underlined how Dr. Jacek was a wonderful colleague, both in research and in maintaining a collegial department. Dr. Jacek's incredible contributions to the profession and the academy, be it through being a Department Chair, being on the University Planning Committee, being President of the McMaster University Faculty Association and then the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations, leading the Ontario Legislature Internship Programme for over a decade, and serving as University Bedel for the last eleven years, were also celebrated. Through his regular presence in the media, and in speaking to groups in the community, Dr. Jacek has become one of the best known faculty members to the broader public in Hamilton and Ontario.

Congratulation and best wishes to Dr. Henry Jacek on his retirement! Truly one of the builders of the Department.
