Michael Gordon’s work on humanitarian sea rescue and state bordering practices in Europe has received the SSHRC Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplement

Jan 08, 2019

PhD Candidate Michael Gordon has been awarded the SSHRC Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplement. Michael will be studying at the University of Warwick in Coventry, England and working under the supervision of Dr. Vicki Squire. As part of the research fellowship, Michael will be conducting research on humanitarian sea rescue in the Mediterranean. The dissertation project looks at the complex interactions of bordering and humanitarianism as it intersects with the governmentality and securitization of migration control. Understanding of the trends and patterns in state and non-state responses migrant mobility, the fragmented nature of their journeys, and global bordering processes that affect those at the literal and figurative margins of the state provides a deeper understanding of borders as sites of struggle, resistance, contestation and agency.
