PhD student Samantha Jackson and Dr. Karen Bird launch 2017 EXCLerator Report

McMaster study, in partnership with the YWCA, shows women & visible minorities are missing in top jobs in Hamilton and Halton.

Nov 09, 2017

The 2017 EXCLerator report on Women & Diversity in Executive and Community Leadership in Hamilton and Halton was released on November 7th at the LevelUp breakfast event at the Hamilton Convention Centre. The report — co-authored by Karen Bird and Samantha Jackson, in partnership with the YWCA Hamilton, the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, and Filion Wakely Thorup Angeletti LLP — looked at about 2,500 senior leadership roles in ten sectors, including corporate boards and executives, public sector top management, and health sector leaders. The findings show that women remain under-represented in senior leadership roles across the two communities. Some areas, notably the corporate sector with just 19% women, lag severely. New in this year's report is the quantification of racial diversity of Hamilton and Halton's top leadership. The findings show "very low" representation of visible minorities across sectors, though leadership among youth stands out with 56% of student leaders being visible minority.
