Start Planning For Level II In Your First Year
Choosing a Level II program can feel like a big decision – but you don’t have to wait until the end of first year to start exploring your options. Social Sciences is designed to give you room to discover what interests you while keeping you on track for the programs you may want to apply to in second year.
Build A First-Year Course Plan That Keeps Your Options Open
Most Level II programs have specific first-year course requirements, and taking the right courses now helps ensure you’re eligible for the programs you’re excited about later. As you plan, think about balancing exploration with intention so you can discover what you enjoy while still meeting the prerequisites you may need.
A good starting point is to include three to six units from different Social Sciences disciplines. This gives you the flexibility to explore new subjects, see what resonates, and keep multiple program pathways open as your interests evolve.
Explore Your Interests Along The Way
Your first year is the perfect time to try something new. Whether it’s a subject you loved in high school or something you’ve never studied before, exploring different areas can help you discover what you want to pursue more deeply in second year.
As you take courses, pay attention to:
- What topics you naturally want to learn more about
- Which assignments or discussions energize you
- Where you can see yourself building skills or a career
Exploration is part of the process – and it’s built into the structure of Social Science programs.
What Type Of Program Are You Looking For?
There’s no single “right” path in Social Sciences – it all depends on what you’re looking for. Exploring the different program types now can help you choose a Level II option that matches your interests, strengths, and long-term goals.
Honours Programs
What it is: A four-year degree designed for students who want a deeper academic experience and may be considering graduate school or research opportunities.
Who it’s for: Students who enjoy their subject area, want more advanced coursework, and are open to pursuing further study after their BA.
Admission requirements:
- Completion of at least 24 units in Level I
- Minimum 5.0 (C) in required introductory courses
- Minimum 5.0 GPA (C)
- For Combined Honours, you must meet the entry requirements for both programs
What to keep in mind: Honours programs offer more specialization and typically include upper-level seminars and research opportunities.
BA Programs
What it is: A three-year degree focused on building foundational knowledge and transferable skills, without the graduate-school emphasis of an Honours program.
Who it’s for: Students who want a flexible, skills-based degree that prepares them for work, further education, or professional programs.
Admission requirements:
- Completion of at least 24 units in Level I
- Minimum 4.0 (C-) in required introductory courses
- Minimum 3.5 GPA (C-)
What to keep in mind: BA programs are less intensive than Honours programs and do not require the same GPA or course load.
Co-op Programs
What it is: An Honours degree with paid work experience built into your program. Co-op allows you to apply your learning in real workplaces and build professional skills.
Who it’s for: Students who want hands-on experience, career exploration, and a competitive edge when entering the workforce.
Admission requirements:
- Must meet all Honours program requirements
- Completion of required first-year courses
- Additional application and interview
- Visit the Social Sciences Co-op website for full details
What to keep in mind: Co-op adds structure and work terms to your degree, so planning ahead in first year is especially important.
Limited Enrolment Programs
What it is: Programs with a set number of available seats. Admission is competitive and based on academic performance.
Who it’s for: Students interested in specialized areas where demand exceeds available space.
Admission requirements:
- Must meet the minimum requirements for the program
- Admission is not guaranteed, even if minimums are met
- Aim for an average above the minimum to be competitive
What to keep in mind: Because space is limited, strong grades in first-year courses are especially important if you’re considering one of these programs.
How To Apply To Your Level II Program
Applying to Level II happens in Mosaic during the spring of your first year. The process is straightforward, and you’ll have time to explore your options, update your choices, and make sure your rankings reflect what you truly want.

How To Apply
You can submit your Level II program choices on Mosaic between April 2 and April 29, 2026. To get started:
- Log in to Mosaic using your MacID
- Select the Student Centre tab
- Click My Academics
- Choose Program/Plan Application
- Select and rank up to four Academic Plans in order of preference
You’ll be placed in the highest-ranked program where you meet the requirements and where space is available.
Why Ranking Your Options Matters
Ranking four different programs gives you flexibility and backup choices. If you aren’t eligible or there isn’t space in your first choice, Mosaic will automatically consider your next option.
- Rank limited enrolment programs first if you’re interested in them
- Rank Honours programs before BA programs
- Make your fourth choice a BA program to keep a guaranteed pathway open
Your rankings help ensure you’re considered for the programs that matter most to you.

It’s Not Final Until The Deadline
Your application isn’t locked in the moment you submit it. You can change your program choices or reorder your rankings anytime while the application is open. This gives you room to reflect, get advice, or adjust your plan as you learn more about your options.
Once the application closes, you won’t be able to view your selections – so it’s a good idea to take a screenshot for your records.

Special Notes For Social Work Applicants
If you’re applying to Honours Social Work (BSW), you must have submitted a separate application to the School of Social Work by February 2.
If you haven’t submitted the supplementary application, do not select Honours Social Work on Mosaic.
