Business Studies Certificate

The Business Studies certificate courses exposes students to core business processes. Courses are taught by professionals with experience in the field. Some areas of focus are: Human Resources, Marketing, Accounting, and Financial Management.

You will gain practical skills that are attractive to future employers. All courses are taught on campus by individuals experienced in the field of study. The courses are used towards your McMaster degree elective requirement.

This is a course based certificate with both full time and part time options. Students must be registered in a Level II or above in a Social Sciences degree program. Not open to continuing students. Contact socscfac@mcmaster.ca for more information.

About The Certificate

Students may begin taking the certificate courses after they have completed level I. There is no application process or admission into the certificate stream. Simply take the six required courses and declare the certificate at the point of graduation.

Undergraduate Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards

All undergraduate students accepted for admission to McMaster University are automatically considered for a McMaster University entrance award. Additional entrance awards, in-course scholarships, bursaries and other forms of financial assistance is available to you at various stages of their undergraduate careers.

Academic Advising

The Academic Advising office is run through the Office of the Associate Dean. The primary goal of the Advising Office is to provide all Social Sciences undergraduate students with the information and guidance they need to succeed in their academic careers.

Advisors can help you make the right academic decisions by explaining policies and regulations as well as presenting different options and supports available in your studies.

An academic advisor can assist you with:

  • Course requirements, dropping and adding courses.
  • Program selection, application and changes.
  • Studying abroad.
  • Transfer credits.
  • Petitions for missed term work, deferred examinations and special consideration.
  • Appeals procedures
  • Referral to other campus services.

Six courses (18 units) overall are required to satisfy the affiliated certificate requirements. These McMaster courses are considered equivalent to 18 units of university electives.

Prerequisite: Open to BA or Hons BA Social Sciences students in Level 2 and above.

SOC SCI 2AC3 Financial Managerial Accounting for Social Sciences

An introduction to financial accounting and managerial accounting with a focus on topics relevant to managerial decision making. The course has two distinct elements: Financial accounting with a focus on understanding financial statements and management accounting with an emphasis on costing, budgeting, and control.

  • Prerequisite: Registration in Level II or above of a program in the Faculty of Social Sciences
  • Grade 11 M or U Math is recommended.
  • Not open to students with credit or registration in Commerce 1AA3, 2AA3, 2AB3, 4AK3.

SOC SCI 2BU3 Introduction to Business for Social Sciences

An overview of the functional areas of business and how they interact.  This course is designed to provide an understanding of the role of business in Canada, by focusing on the basics of management, organizational theory and structure.

  • Prerequisite: Registration in Level II or above of a program in the Faculty of Social Sciences.
  • Not open to students with credit in Commerce 1B03, 1E03.

SOC SCI 2EN3 Entrepreneurial Training for Social Sciences

This course will offer a careful examination of the process of entrepreneurship, concentrating on both theoretical styles and practical approaches.

  • Prerequisite:  Registration in Level II or above of a program in the Faculty of Social Sciences.
  • Completion of at least one course from Soc Sci 2AC3, 2BU3, or 2MR3 is strongly recommended.
  • Not open to students with credit in Engn Mgt 5E03.

SOC SCI 2HR3 Human Resources Management for Social Sciences

Develops comprehensive knowledge and the skills required to carry out Human Resources functions. Includes a variety of methods such as case studies and simulations to enhance learning activities.

  • Prerequisite: Registration in Level II or above of a program in the Faculty of Social Sciences.
  • Not open to students with credit or registration in Commerce 2BC3.

SOC SCI 2MR3  Introduction to Marketing for Social Sciences

This course examines how environmental forces shape an organization’s marketing program.  Students will learn to create marketing plans that reflect current consumer behaviour patterns, and practice the development of a product or service component of the marketing mix.

  • Prerequisite: Registration in Level II or above of a program in the Faculty of Social Sciences.
  • Not open to students with credit or registration in Commerce 2MA3.

SOC SCI 2BA3  Introduction to Business Analysis for Social Sciences

The foundation of Business Analysis is planning, stakeholder analysis, structure and cultural awareness of an enterprise. Prepare for Business Analysis projects through needs analysis and business plan development using industry standard strategies such as project charter, interview and focus group techniques.

  • Prerequisite: Registration in Level II or above of a program in the Faculty of Social Sciences.
